It's been awhile since Helmer has received much attention. Most of the guys that were working on it early summer got involved in a number of construction projects together. We had a great time building decks, barns and patio covers - but Helmer languished in the garage. Then, we started building a tiny house. That is (ironically) a large undertaking. It should be done this month (November 15) and we will return our attention to a small brown volvo. Some Summer Pictures

Loaded Helmer onto a rather large trailer for the Harvest Days Parade. Since the car has no engine, we had to use manpower instead of horse power. Getting a bunch of guys together around a car is always an adventure. Here are some pictures of us getting ready for Harvest Days and then being there. Our business community is generous!
O'Reilly's Auto Parts set up our Collaborative restoration / mentoring project with a wholesale account. Now we can replace all the Helmer fluids, buy sandpaper and gaskets for way less! CAM 1 in Dollars Corner is doing all our engine machine work labor for free! KAB housed us and our car for several months after he arrived and worked with us to fix whatever was needed to get road worthy. Dick's Tires gave us... tires. Mill Creek Pub fed us. The BGMC car is going to be spectacular. The generosity of the community gives us far more opportunity and lots of great experience for the guys. Thanks! As of today, Helmer is in pieces. He's at his new home but no longer all together. The restoration metaphor is at that point where deconstruction must take place before new life can emerge. Noah and I took off the doors, hood, trim and lights last week. We were able to do this because of a generous donation of place. The Pang's have allowed us use of their three bay shop as a spot to spread out. In partial exchange, we will be providing the labor for a new roof and siding. Now if we can just keep track of all the parts...
Also, good news, Cam 1 in Dollars Corner has agreed to be our "Old School" Machine shop. We will be taking the engine to them in the next few weeks for a freshening up. This will be a great chance for all of us to have a look inside an internal combustion engine in a lot more detail than the average person gets now days. A lot of the modern cars don't even have a dipstick anymore! We have also decided on a color - you can see it in one of the pictures above. Meet Helmer - a 1973 Volvo P1800ES.
This is a car that will not be given up on. Those that put their sore backs, bashed knuckles and pride into their craft, will be rewarded with a vehicle that will not give up on them. Helmer Petterson was the guy who first dreamed up this amazing car. A 1966 owned by Irv Gordon holds the world record for accumulated mileage - 3,000,000 miles and counting Mentors and collaborators Ed, Steve, Miguel, Kody and Jeremy, together with mentees Logan and Curtis, Wayne, Kyle and Noah are gearing up to breath new life into this tired old car. We are going to take it apart, repair, paint and polish and then put it all back together with a fresh spirit. This will happen at K.A.B. Motors and Stan's Body Shop. Two of Battle Ground's best and oldest businesses. Stop by and have a look. |
